I've seen employers decide not to move forward in hiring because the candidate did not follow up. You don't need to send a handwritten note through the mail. Instead, get the email address from the headhunter or assistant and send a simple note. It's not important what you say—just two sentences. Thank them for their time, express enthusiasm for the opportunity, and convey your interest (or lack thereof) in continuing the process.
