Last week, I sat down with my niece who just graduated from the University of Michigan. She's headed to NYC to start a career in fashion and asked for advice. How much of this advice to a 22-year-old entry-level candidate is applicable to executives?

  • Move to the city where you want to live/work. Don't wait to get a job. (I know this is a privileged take.)

  • Use LinkedIn. Play the "I know someone who knows someone" game. Start with the University of Michigan alumni page.

  • Go into your meeting with a POV. Every "boss" wants to know how to market to Gen Z. Share your point of view and where you see opportunities. Don’t walk in saying, "I just want to get my foot in the door."

  • Subscribe to Lauren Sherman at Puck and study her topics and references. I guarantee you'll be one of the few graduates to reference her in an interview.

  • Network, network, network. Track every person you meet and build a list. Maintain and nurture that list throughout your career.
