My client often talks about the emotional intelligence (EQ) of candidates I bring into the process. I focus on two key tenets: self-awareness and social skills. These can be tough to gauge in a 30-minute video call, but I’ve gotten pretty good at it.

Social skills: Find a personal detail about your conversation partner and ask about it. Be curious! Also, be ready to share what you’re reading, listening to, or watching—simple “cocktail party” rapport. Some people are naturals, but others (like me) have to work at it.

Self-awareness: Show humility when describing your experience. Give props to a manager or collaborator, and be mindful of how long you’re talking.
